Diving Excursions
The typical diving day is a two-tank dive trip, transfer from the hotel is at around 8h00 and you'll be back to our marina between 13h00 and 15h00, with still all the afternoon for a third dive or to relax on a beautiful beach.
Once arrived at the dive center for the check-in, every diver will get his own box for his dive equipment that he will keep throughout the holidays. On demand we have special storage possibilities for Photo or Video equipment. The first day at Angel Fish Dive Center starts with a detailed briefing about the premises itself and the general diving rules in our center dealing with the specific characteristics of diving in Seychelles. Divers with only a few dives in their logbook and who didn't dived for quite a while are recommended to do a check dive with us.
Angel Fish Dive Center is the only dive center on Mahe that has a direct jetty access to embark the boat. This fact helps the daily diving a lot compared with other activities on the island.
We organize dive trips all around Mahe (sse map), dive sites are selected accordingly to divers' experience and weather situation. Navigation times are between 20 and 50 minutes. Mineral water is always available on the boat and during the surface interval our staff will offer a snack based on tropical fruits.
After the second dive back to the dive center where you'll find an equipment room and the transfer back to the hotel. We can organize third dives and beautiful night dives every day.
Specialties and Marine Life
The Inner Islands of the Seychelles archipel (Mahe, Praslin, La Digue, u.a.) are world famous for their images of the granite boulders that give the islands a characteristic view. This granite boulders are also to be found under the water and give a bizarre image. The Inner Islands form an underwater plateau that rises from the depths of the Indian Ocean to a level between 30 meters (98 feet) and 50 meters (165 feet). This leads to the fact that dives around the main islands are rather shallow and seldom exceed 20 meters (65 feet). But at different dive spots you also get 30 meters (98 feet) and more. Currents can get quite strong on dive sites exposed to the ocean, what always brings a stunning amount of marine life. The nice side of the diving is that we have dive sites for every diver's level.
Seychelles is not a mass diving destination – therefore diving groups are rather small and seldom exceed 6-8 people. Most of the times you are the only ones diving at a particular spot and that gives diving in Seychelles an exclusive character. Most of the dives are organized as drift dives what means the boat follows the divers once they are in the water and picks them up wherever they end the dive. At the end of each dive the safety stop in 5 meters for three minutes is obligatory and we always use a signal buoy to surface safely.
The underwater world of the Inner Islands is unique in its kind. Huge and bizarre looking granite boulder formation give a spectacular impression. There are countless rifts, clefts and overhangs, as well as "swim throughs" where marine life is extremely variegated. The corals that can be seen very often are hard corals and fan corals (in some areas even the seldom white fan corals), but in some spots of Mahe there are beautiful coloured soft corals growing on the granite boulders.
The amount of fishes in Seychelles is impressive and breathtaking. There are different seasons with different possibilities to have encounters with different species. The first one to mention is the period from October to December where it is very likely to see whale sharks and manta rays. The water that has a lot of plankton during these months attracts these gentle giants and with a bit of luck you can even see groups of whale sharks. To dive with whale shark is an experience that every diver lives for and once he did it he will never forget this moment for the rest of his life. Year-round you will be able to see big groups of snappers, fusiliers, jack fishes, bat fishes and different kinds of stingrays in impressive sizes. Furthermore there are nurse sharks, white tip reef sharks, guitar sharks and grey reef sharks to be seen as well as big groups of eagle rays (up to 50 at a time) and Mobula rays. The other underwater highlights that are often spotted are: turtles, lobster, scorpion fishes, stone fishes, bump head parrot fishes, napoleon fishes, morays and all tropical reef fishes that are common in the Indian Ocean.
Seasons and Temperatures
Air temperature: around 32°C during daytime and 25°C during the night, all year round.
Water temperature: all year round between 27°-30°, during the south east monsoon there can be colder currents of 24°C present.
Monsoon periods: In Seychelles you have two main monsoon periods. One is the North West monsoon that blows from November until March (this wind brings normally more rain especially in December and humidity is therefore relatively high). The North West monsoon is not as consistently as the south east monsoon that blows from Mai until September and has its peak in July/August. Tropical rain is possible during both periods but there are always sunny intervals in between.
Diving is possible all year round but is best in the period between the peaks of these winds. That means from February until May and from September until December (whale shark time!!).
